The UK government recently announced an apprenticeship support package designed to remove the financial barriers to hiring apprentices.
Onboarding fees are coming down, and one off payments are being introduced for
employers taking on apprentices who meet certain criteria, with the incentives available
from October 2026. For smaller firms and subcontractors, where every wage has to justify
itself, that support can turn a maybe into a yes.
The UK Government has various funding options and financial incentives in place to help
organisations like yours access the benefits of apprenticeships. These take in the
apprenticeship and skills levy for larger contractors, and government co funding for smaller
firms.
A number of these incentives carry eligibility criteria, the size of your organisation among
them, and the official guidance is not always written with a busy site manager in mind.

They can, and it happens more often than people expect. A lot of highly skilled
tradespeople have never had a qualification that reflects what they can do. An
apprenticeship puts that right, recognising the experience they already have while filling in
anything they were never formally taught.
Carefully, and with you. Apprentices need protected time for off the job learning, though
when that happens is flexible. Some takes place in our Stevenage workshops where people
can practise away from live work, and the rest sits with you. We agree the pattern in advance
so you can build it into your programme rather than having it land mid phase.
