PREPARING YOUng people FOR Future employment

What are Traineeships?

Traineeships help 16 to 24 year olds get ready for an apprenticeship or job if they don’t have the appropriate skills or experience.

A traineeship is a skills development programme that includes a work placement. A Hart Traineeship typically lasts 8-12 weeks.

A Hart traineeship has 2 main components:

  • 4-5 week Classroom Learning

Focus on employability skills, a Level 1sector specific qualification, and development of maths and English.

  • 3-6 week Work Placement

Focus on development experience and understand of the sector and business.

Employer benefits from traineeships INCLUDE:

  • Flexibility, traineeships can be sector-focused and is funded by the government,
  • Gives your current employees experience in training and mentoring,
  • Allows you to design a programme that suits both the needs of your business and the needs of the trainee,
  • Can help you increase capacity and productivity,
  • Can help you develop a loyal and talented workforce,
  • Allows you to help tackle youth unemployment,
  • Is a route into an apprenticeship,
  • Allows you to get to know and work with young people prior to recruiting apprentices and,
  • Employers who make new work placement opportunities available can also receive an incentive payment of £1000 per learner, for up to 10 learners.

When offering a traineeship work placement you need to provide:

  • Safe, meaningful and high-quality work experience,
  • A minimum of 70 hours of work experience – but no more than 240 hours for benefit claimants – over the duration of the traineeship (maximum of one year) and as agreed with the traineeship provider,
  • Constructive feedback and advice to the trainee,
  • An interview for an apprenticeship or job in your business at the end of the traineeship if one is available and,
  • An exit interview at the end of the traineeship with meaningful written feedback if no job is available.

Hart Traineeships work best as bespoke programmes to meet the needs of your business. We recommend that the needs of the business and the learner are taken into account when designing the programme.

SUPPORT theiR next step

In the past we have worked with employers from retail, hospitality, administration, construction and care sectors to offer work experience placements that give young people a real understanding of the type of work they’ll be asked to do in that job and help them gain the confidence and skills needed to progress.

Employers often go on to offer trainees a suitable part/full time role or apprenticeship after completing a traineeship with them and have said that the traineeship was really important for helping them take that next step.

"They really helped me with my communication skills and my Work Placement coach found Blue Arrow. I was really excited because I have always wanted a career in admin and this was my chance to get my foot through the door. After a few weeks, they told me that they liked me and offered me a full time job!"
